Classical dance legend Kanak Rele handed away on February 22, 2023. The Mohiniyattam exponent, who was awarded the primary Guru Gopinath Nationwide Puraskaram of the Authorities of Kerala, died on the age of 85 in Mumbai.
Born to to folks Shivdas and Madhuri in 1937 Dr. Rele spent her childhood in West Bengal’s Santiniketan. On the age of seven, Dr. Rele was initiated into Kathakali by Guru Karunakara Panicker. The Gujarat-born Kanak crossed insurmountable obstacles as she was initiated into the male-dominated world of Kathakali. Throughout her coaching, a nagging ache in her leg on the age of ten was recognized as polio. However she overcame it along with her devoted dance follow.
In 1973, Dr. Rele established the Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya providing undergraduate, post-graduate and Ph.D levels affiliated to the Bombay College.
In 2022, Dr. Rele had launched the e-book — Me and My Mohini Attam, which gave a peek into her life with biographical narrations by her niece, Radha Khambati.
Dr. Rele created one other file for herself by incomes her Ph.D in dance, the primary in India, in 1977. Her doctoral thesis was titled, ‘Mohini Attam: All facets and Spheres of Affect’.
Later in 2013, Dr. Rele was conferred the Padma Bhushan.
Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais expressed condolences on the demise and in a condolence message mentioned: “Padma Bhushan Dr Kanak Rele devoted her complete life to the reason for promotion, propagation and analysis of Indian classical dance varieties. She was one of many best exponents of Mohiniyattam and Kathakali. Dr Rele made elementary work within the discipline of dance by way of her Nalanda Dance Analysis Centre and the Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya. She skilled tons of of scholars and introduced classical dance near the individuals. In her demise we have now misplaced an important Nritya Tapaswini”.
